immeasurable value. Karst is a type of landscape that, according to estimates, covers around 20% of the world&#8217;s land surface and is characterized by distinctive landforms.Caves and other speleological features represent some of the few places on our planet where it is still possible to explore and map insufficiently investigated spaces. In addition to their importance for fundamental scientific research, speleology often has a practical role, given that significant reserves of groundwater are commonly found in limestone underground environments. Speleological features are an important part of an area&#8217;s geodiversity, which is why their significance in the context of heritage conservation and protection is continually emphasized. They are also habitats for some of the rarest ecosystems on our planet. Hundreds of caves around the world are open to visitors and represent valuable resources for tourism. For all these reasons, caves and karst contribute to the well-being of society, while also presenting specific challenges.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-177dfcc2 aux-appear-watch-animation aux-fade-in-up elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"177dfcc2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The first records of speleological features in the area of Djerdap National Park date back to the late 19th century, when they were collected and published by the renowned Serbian geographer Jovan Cvijic.<\/p><p>The international significance of Djerdap&#8217;s geological and geomorphological heritage was confirmed by the designation of Djerdap as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020. Covering an area of approximately 1,330 km\u00b2, the Geopark is an area of exceptional geological and geomorphological diversity. In addition to the famous Djerdap Gorge, the area is characterized by numerous karst and fluvio-karst landforms, including caves, natural rock arches, springs, canyons and other landforms created by the action of water and the processes of rock dissolution.<\/p><p>Among the particularly significant features are Rajkova Cave near Majdanpek, one of the best-known caves in the area; the Prerast Tunnel Cave in the canyon of the Zamna River, a protected geomorphological phenomenon approximately 155 m long through which the Zamna River flows; and Suplja Stena Natural Arch, an impressive fluvio-karst natural bridge in the vicinity of Majdanpek. Another important part of the karst heritage is represented by the natural arches in the Vratna River Canyon, as well as numerous other features that bear witness to the complex processes that have shaped this landscape.<\/p><p>Visitors to Djerdap National Park and Geopark also have the opportunity to explore some of the area&#8217;s speleological features. One of them is Gradasnica Cave, accessible via a maintained 1.7 km-long hiking trail. Such sites provide an opportunity to experience underground landforms firsthand and gain a better understanding of the importance of karst systems.<\/p><p>International Caves and Karst Day is an opportunity to look at caves not only as tourist attractions, but as sensitive natural systems that preserve traces of geological history, provide habitats for specialized organisms, and play an important role in the preservation of groundwater.<\/p><p>Djerdap UNESCO Global Geopark joins the celebration of International Caves and Karst Day, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance
