Kovilovo

Forest of sessile oak and hornbeam

The area of Kovilovo with the eponymous viewpoint, which is under the 1st degree protection regime within the Djerdap National Park, descends steeply towards a wide part of the Danube. Very steep hill slopes are overgrown with coppice forests and thickets.
Walnut (Juglans regia), large-leaved linden (Tilia platyphyllos), small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata), sessile oak (Quercus petraea), Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto), Turkey oak (Quercus cerris), common hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis), beech (Fagus moesiaca) and other species occur on rugged slopes with gneiss substratum.

Kovilovo is also a habitat of yellow yarrow (Achillea clypeolata), an endemic species with a very limited distribution. Because of scarce vegetation, affected by the ultramafic peridotitic substrate, Kovilovo viewpoint (358 m a.s.l.) is locally known as Golo Brdo (“Bare Hill”). It is accessible via a marked hiking trail.
