Djerdap UNESCO Global Geopark possesses a cultural heritage of long and significant history. The findings dating back to prehistory, the period of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages are the proof of its rich history. Thanks to this, a unique cultural landscape, formed and changed continuously over more than ten millennia, can be seen here.
The archaeological sites of Lepenski Vir, Vlasac and Rudna Glava prove the presence of mankind as early as in the prehistory. Among many traces of human activities within the area of Djerdap UNESCO Global Geopark, there are numerous monuments from the period of the Roman Empire.
Unfortunately, the artificial Djerdap Lake submerged some of these, such as the Roman Road, the inscriptions of Roman emperors and several fortifications. However, the Trajan’s Plaque, a pillar of the impressive Trajan’s Bridge and the Castrum Diana remained to testify to the construction skills and strength of the Roman Empire. A very rich history of the medieval period is evidenced by the preserved fortresses of Golubac and Fetislam, as well as Tumane, Vratna and the Holy Trinity monasteries.
The urban heritage is visible in the Old Bazaar in Kladovo, whilst the industrial heritage at the signal stations which were used to regulate the navigation in once dangerous Danube Cauldrons (the Kazan Gorge). Djerdap UNESCO Global Geopark also displays rich traditional architecture, folk traditions and customs, and is proud of its hospitable hosts.
