Lepenski Vir

Early Mesolithic to Early Neolithic settlement (9500-5500 BC), Boljetin village

Lepenski Vir is one of the best known Mesolithic and Early Neolithic sites in Europe and the world. It was discovered in the 1960s during archaeological surveys in advance of the construction of Hydroelectric Power Plant “Djerdap 1”. The site tells some of the most interesting stories providing a glimpse into our early prehistoric past.
The most abundant traces of prehistoric habitation at Lepenski Vir are connected with the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, but there are also signs of occupation dated to the Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods.

The most prominent phase at Lepenski Vir is associated with the construction of buildings with trapezoidal bases, dated to around 8000 years ago. This is arguably one of the most interesting periods in human history; a time of economic, cultural, socio-ideological, and spiritual change caused by new contact between different populations.

It is also the time of the transformation of hunter-gatherer-fisher communities into the first stock-breeding and agricultural communities in Europe. In the Danube gorges area, this transformation is characterized by some of the most original known cultural expressions ever accomplished in World Prehistory, the majority of which were discovered at Lepenski Vir.
