Djerdap Gorge/Iron Gate

An area with diverse natural, cultural and historical heritage

The Djerdap Gorge or the Iron Gate is the longest breakthrough gorge in Europe, over 100 km long. The enormous energy of the Danube’s water deeply incised the Southern Carpathians, revealing an impressive atlas of the geological history of the Earth’s crust.
The toponym Djerdap derives from the Persian word “girdap”, meaning a whirlpool or vortex. The southern side of the gorge belongs to Serbia, and the northern to Romania.

The Djerdap Gorge is composite and consists of four smaller gorges and three valleys: Golubac Gorge, Liubcova Valley, Gospodjin Vir Gorge, Donji Milanovac Valley, Kazan Gorge, Orșova Valley and Sip Gorge. A large number of deep whirlpools and giant potholes exist in this sector of the Danube. Some of them are deeper than 80 m, so the Danube’s riverbed locally lies below the sea level.
