Тhe first protected geoheritage site in Djerdap area
Short and picturesque Boljetinska Reka Gorge is under the state protection as an important geoheritage site in Serbia. It was formed by the incision of the Boljetinska Reka River into sedimentary rocks from the Mesozoic period, between 170 and 113 million years old; at that time, the area was covered by the Tethys Ocean.
Meanwhile, due to tectonic movements and the consequent formation of the Carpathian mountain range, the rock strata have undergone numerous foldings and faultings, gradually obtaining their current appearance
